Castletown-Berehaven, also known as Castletownbere, is located by Berehaven Harbour on the Beara Peninsula.
It is one of the largest fishing ports in Ireland, with many fine seafood restaurants and pubs to be found in the town.
The United States Navy established U.S. Naval Air Station Berehaven Ireland on 29 April 1918 during World War I. The base closed shortly after the First Armistice in November 1918.
Following the Anglo-Irish in 1921, Britain would retain sovereignty over three strategically important ports known as the Treaty ports, one being the Port at Berehaven.
Berehaven remained under British sovereignty until 29 September 1938 when the territory was ceded to Ireland in the Anglo-Irish Trade Agreement of 1938.
The area is the setting for Daphne du Maurier’s 1943 novel Hungry Hill, which was named after the mountain in the vicinity.
