Toormakeady is a Gaeltacht area in south County Mayo, located between the shores of Lough Mask and the Partry Mountains.
Tourmakeady is noted for its rugged and picturesque scenery, with wonderful walks, and natural waterfall located in Tourmakeady Woods.
The Toormakeady loop starts from the village and takes you through Tourmakeady Woods, where the highlight is a spectacular waterfall which you pass en-route.
The area is also renowned for its fishing from the shores of Lough Mask.
On 3 May 1921, during the Irish War of Independence the Irish Republican Army south Mayo flying column of around 30 men together with a small number of men from east Mayo mounted an ambush at Toormakeady.
The events of this day have been written about in Donal Buckley’s book The Battle of Tourmakeady.
