Dunquin, from the Irish meaning “Caon’s stronghold”, is a Gaeltacht village in west County Kerry on the western tip of the Dingle Peninsula.
A museum in the village tells the story of the nearby Blasket Islands and the lives of the people who lived there.
In 1588, many ships from the Spanish Armada sought shelter in the area between Dunquin and the Blasket Islands, with some being wrecked there. Today, a memorial stands on the cliffs overlooking the site.
The beautiful Dingle Way walking trail passes through Dunquin on its loop around the peninsula.
A number of scenes from the 1970 film Ryan’s Daughter were shot at nearby Coumineole Beach and in Dunquin.
