The Gap of Dunloe, from the Irish meaning “Lóich’s stronghold”, is a narrow mountain pass that separates the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks from the Purple Mountain Group range in County Kerry.
The picturesque setting makes it one of Kerry’s most popular tourist destinations, with a series of five lakes connected by the River Loe.
The Gap of Dunloe formed during Ireland’s last ice age 25,000 years ago as the result of a glacial breach.
The mountain ranges on either side of The Gap are popular hill walking routes.
