Castlemaine, from the Irish meaning “Castle on the River Maine”, is a village in mid Kerry between Tralee and Killorglin.
The well-known song, The Wild Colonial Boy is about the infamous Australian outlaw Jack Duggan, who was born in Castlemaine.
A bar called Jack Duggan’s Bar is to be found in the village.
The castle was originally built on a rock in the centre of the River Maine in 1215 by the Fitzgeralds, Earls of Desmond.
From 1215 until the 1570s, the Fitzgeralds had possession of the castle before it changed hands a number of times. It was destroyed by Cromwellian forces in 1652.
There are a number of walking trails to explore around Castlemaine, with mountain tracks and marked forest loops to avail of.
Numerous historic places are to be found in the locality, including the Mass Rock at Killoclohane Wood and a number of Ogham Stones in the vicinity.
Fishing enthusiasts can also do a spot of salmon and trout fishing on the River Maine.
