Balla is a village in County Mayo, close to Castlebar.
Balla Round Tower is located on the site of the modern graveyard. The tower is believed to date from the 12th century & was used as a bell-tower in the 19th century.
In early times the village was known as ‘Ros Dairbhreach’, meaning ‘The Height of the Oak Wood’.
At the beginning of the 21st century, 2000 oak trees were planted, creating a new wood in Balla’s park.
Balla offers the fisherman access to a chain of lakes which have an abundance of salmon and trout.
