Fanad Head Lighthouse stands between the idyllic Lough Swilly and sandy Mulroy Bay in the Donegal Gaeltacht.
Fanad has been voted one of the most beautiful lighthouses in the world, with its location on the eastern shore of the windswept Fanad Peninsula.
Following the shipwreck of the HMS Saldanha in the waters of Lough Swilly in 1812, a lighthouse was proposed for Fanad Head.
There is evidence of the occupation of Fanad during the Bronze Age (2,000 – 500 BC) in the form of tombs and related monuments.
