The Cliffs of Moher are sea cliffs located at the southwestern edge of the Burren region in County Clare, Ireland.
They run for about 14 kilometres (9 miles) and reach their maximum height of 214 metres (702 ft) near O’Brien’s Tower, a round stone tower near the midpoint of the cliffs, which was built in 1835 by Sir Cornelius O’Brien.
More than one million visitors come to see them each year.
The Cliffs take their name from a ruined promontory fort ‘Mothar’, which was demolished during the Napoleonic Wars in the early 1800s, to make room for a signal tower at Hag’s Head.
The word ‘Mothar’ in old Gaelic means ‘the ruin of a fort’.
