Kilrush is at the centre of the rich and diverse coastal landscape of the West Clare Peninsula and is set in an unforgettable seascape that features the grand River Shannon, the islands of Hogg and Scattery and the picturesque village of Cappa.
The designation of Kilrush as a Heritage Town recognizes its legacy as a landlord estate town with a rich maritime tradition.
Kilrush Marina is perfectly located for exploring the exciting west coast with its dramatic scenery and enticing anchorages.
A highpoint close by are the grand Vandeleur Walled Gardens. Here, beautiful old stonewalls enclose a sheltered 2 acre walled garden which is set among 420 acres of native woodland.
Cappa is a small rocky beach just by Cappa pier and harbour. Whilst the pier has been extensively used since 1764.
Today you are more likely to find visitors jumping off the pier enjoying the sea at the Shannon estuary’s only blue flag beach.
A short distance away is Scattery Island; a worthwhile place to visit as it is of ecological interest with one of the few remaining examples of semi-natural grasslands in the country.
